Marine Atlantic announces approximately $270 million in Newfoundland and Labrador investments as part of major infrastructure improvement program

Argentia, NL – The Honourable Joanne Thompson, Canada’s Minister of Fisheries, along with Murray Hupman, President and CEO of Marine Atlantic, today announced approximately $270 million in Newfoundland and Labrador infrastructure investments as part of a new multi-year capital infrastructure program valued at approximately $350 million to modernize critical shore-side infrastructure, improve service reliability and support the long-term delivery of safe, efficient ferry service between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia.

Marine Atlantic provides an important transportation link for residents, visitors and the commercial trucking industry, connecting Newfoundland and Labrador to mainland Canada through the Trans-Canada Highway. This investment will help ensure the organization continues the delivery of the dependable ferry service that people and businesses rely on.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, planned work includes ramp upgrades in Argentia, dock extensions and auto-mooring upgrades in Port aux Basques, electrical improvements to support shore power in both ports, and navigation improvements in Port aux Basques Harbour, including the planned removal of Vardy’s Rock. These investments build upon approximately $80 million in dock and terminal investments in North Sydney announced yesterday and will support safer, more reliable and more efficient service for customers and commercial traffic.
