What to know before you go – travelling with Marine Atlantic
As spring temperatures begin to rise, many of us are getting ready for our long-awaited summer travel plans. While you may be busy planning your itinerary and activities, it’s equally important to plan for your travel day. Travelling with Marine Atlantic is an easy process, but knowing the ropes can make your travel smoother than ever before.
Here’s everything you should know before you go.
Stick to a Schedule
Much like air travel, those who are travelling with Marine Atlantic must check in at our terminal two hours before their scheduled departure time. Boarding typically begins within 90 to 120 minutes ahead of departure time. A late arrival at the terminal may mean you are not able to board the vessel.
Depending on your location, it may take you several hours to reach the terminal. Be sure to plan your travel day in advance to make sure you’re prepared for the drive and to ensure a timely arrival.
ID please!
When travelling with Marine Atlantic, all passengers must have ID present for check in, including minors over the age of five years. Passengers aged 5-18 require either one piece of government-issued identification with a photo, or two pieces without a photo. Digital forms of identification are not permitted.
Master the Motion
For land lovers who haven’t yet grown their sea legs, Gravol or motion sickness medication can help relieve some of the symptoms associated with motion sickness while at sea. Because motion sickness medications are regulated products that must be obtained at an authorized pharmacy, Marine Atlantic is not permitted to sell these products. If you’re not used to sailing or feel that you may experience motion sickness, we suggest you purchase the appropriate medication ahead of your travels and make sure to have them in a convenient spot for use.
Pack a Grab Bag
Once you board the vessel and depart the vehicle deck, you will not be permitted to go back to your vehicle until arriving at your destination. We suggest that all passengers pack a small bag of essential items to take with them once they leave their vehicle. Items to pack should include any medications you may need, a change of clothes, and any devices and charging cables. These bags should be easy for you to carry and easily accessible.
Save your Spot
The most important thing to do ahead of your travel day is to book your travel! While reservations are not required, they are strongly recommended. Booking your trip gives you the security of having confirmed space and preferred amenities on the sailing of your choice, and it makes is easier for us to accommodate your travel plans.
