Proud of our History - Mulgrave, Nova Scotia

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Dating back to the 1800s, the port of Mulgrave was considered the gateway to Cape Breton Island for many decades. An important and strategically located community on the Strait of Canso, the people of Mulgrave helped connect rail and road traffic travelling between mainland Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and Newfoundland on a daily basis. In 1955, the Canso Causeway opened providing a road network directly to Cape Breton, marking the end of the Mulgrave ferry service that played such a vital role in the Cape Breton and Newfoundland economies.
