Marine Atlantic Selects Site of New Port aux Basques Administration Building

St. John's, NL -  Marine Atlantic is pleased to announce that the Corporation has acquired land and will be moving forward with the construction of a new administration building at 175 Hardy's Arterial Road in the Town of Port aux Basques.

Once constructed, the new facility will address space and infrastructure challenges and consolidate administrative functions currently being undertaken in separate locations. The new facility will offer improved space and amenities for employees and operations, have a strengthened focus on openness, collaboration, employee wellness and environmental responsibility as well as be in close proximity to schools, daycare services and recreational facilities.

"This will be a multi-million dollar facility that will consolidate administrative functions in Port aux Basques, similar to what has been done in other areas of our organization," said Kristopher Parsons, Chair of Marine Atlantic's Board of Directors. "We are very excited about the construction of our new facility and the benefits it will bring for our operations, as well as our overall presence and investment in the local community. We will also investigate partnership opportunities that could result in mutual benefits for our operations, employees and local residents."

"Marine Atlantic provides the vital connection from our island portion of our province to the mainland. I am so pleased that the new Marine Atlantic Administration Building will be located here in Port aux Basques - the Gateway to our Province," said Long Range Mountains MP Gudie Hutchings. "By consolidating the existing locations into one location, Marine Atlantic will be able to continue to improve the services that they offer to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, the commercial traffic, and the tourists who come to explore our beautiful province. This project will also provide jobs for individuals right here in the Long Range Mountains for years to come. Thank you to Marine Atlantic and to Minister Garneau for working to make this project a reality."

It is expected that initial site preparation activities will begin in the weeks ahead with the building tentatively scheduled to open in the 2020-21 fiscal year.

NOTE TO EDITORS -  Marine Atlantic officials will be joined by Newfoundland and Labrador's 7 Members of Parliament for an official sod turning event at the site of the new administration building, 175 Hardy's Arterial Road, at 2:00pm, Monday, July 2. Media Representatives are welcome to attend.
