Remembering the 75th Anniversary of the Sinking of the SS Caribou

The SS Caribou continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of the thousands of seafarers and families who remember the tragedy that took place in the Cabot Strait on an October night 75 years ago.

On October 14, 1942, the SS Caribou was en route from North Sydney to Port aux Basques when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Of the 237 men, women and children who were on the vessel, 136 people were unable to be rescued.

We commemorate and remember the 75th anniversary of this tragic sailing, and the sacrifice of those who came before us. The SS Caribou will always be a part of our history and remembered within Marine Atlantic and our port communities.

Lest We Forget.
