Proud of our History - The SS Glencoe

Marine Atlantic, its predecessor CN Marine, and pre-confederation Newfoundland coastal boats have a strong and proud history serving the people of Atlantic Canada through ferry terminals, passenger vessels and rail service.

Named after a location in Scotland, the SS Glencoe was the longest serving vessel of the so-called alphabet fleet. During its years of service it spent most of its time travelling the waters and visiting the communities of southern Newfoundland. At 208 feet in length and weighing 767 tonnes, the vessel was larger than most others in the alphabet fleet and helped deliver supplies such as food, fuel and clothing to residents in remote and isolated areas.

As always, we welcome your photos for posting in a future blog. Please email your photos to [email protected] including any facts such as the date and location.
