Service Interruption

Last week, we announced that during its integration activities, a problem was identified with the Ala’suinu’s lubrication system. Following further investigation, a way forward has been identified and activities are ongoing to correct the issue. Due to the timeframe required to complete the necessary work and integration activities, the first sailing of the 2024 Argentia service will be delayed until June 26. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

As a result of the service interruption, sailings on the Argentia - North Sydney service on the Ala’suinu between June 14 and June 25, 2024, are cancelled. Customers impacted will be re-routed through the Gulf service (Port aux Basques – North Sydney).

Customers will be automatically rebooked on the next available departure and will receive an email notification and an SMS message with updated travel information. Customers who wish to amend their travel plans after being rescheduled are encouraged to amend online or contact Reservations at 1-800-341-7981.

Compensation for this disruption to the Argentia Service will also be provided, as outlined below.

  • All vouchers are valid for one year.
  • Customers who choose to cancel Argentia bookings, or change to the Gulf route, before sailings are cancelled by Marine Atlantic will not receive compensation.
  • Customers will be issued vouchers based on impacted departures, meaning customers with return bookings that are also affected will receive compensation for both travel segments.
  • Customers will receive their travel vouchers by mail within approximately 3-5 weeks.
  • Customers who wish to have vouchers applied to an existing booking, not exceeding the price of the booking, may contact Customer Relations.

Customers impacted by these schedule changes will receive an email notification and an SMS message with updated travel information.

Where applicable, customers will be automatically rebooked on revised departure time. Customers who wish to amend their travel plans after being rescheduled are encouraged to do so online or contact our call centre at 1-800-341-7981. 

While the introduction of additional crossings on the Port aux Basques service will add more capacity, it will also result in non-traditional sailing times, including the introduction of late-night and early-morning departure and arrival times. 

Compensation for this disruption to the Gulf Service will also be provided, as outlined below.

While the introduction of additional crossings on the Port aux Basques service will add more capacity, it will also result in non-traditional sailing times. To add additional capacity, we have had to introduce late-night and early-morning departure and arrival times.

What is the mechanical issue with the Ala'suinu?

Since the Ala’suinu's arrival in Canada, Marine Atlantic has been focused on the many activities required to prepare the vessel to enter service. This includes regulatory certifications and the review of its operating systems. In recent days technicians identified an unforeseen issue with the lubrication system on board the vessel.

Why wasn’t the Atlantic Vision kept in service until the Ala’suinu was fully integrated into the fleet?

The lease for the Atlantic Vision expired in May and we were not able to extend it.

How will impacted customers be re-booked?

Argentia Sailings 
All sailings on the Argentia service have been cancelled. You will be automatically rebooked on the next available departure on the Gulf Service. If you wish to amend your travel plans after being rescheduled, we encourage you to amend your booking online, or contact Reservations at 1-800-341-7981. 

Gulf Sailings 
Sailings between Port aux Basques and North Sydney will be rescheduled to the closest possible departure time to accommodate cancellations on the Argentia service. You will be contacted via email and SMS with updated travel information. We are adding additional sailings to minimize departure delays. If you wish to amend your travel plans after being rescheduled, we encourage you to amend your booking online, or contact Reservations at 1-800-341-7981. 

Will the increase in passenger traffic impact commercial capacity?

One of our key objectives is not to adversely impact our commercial customers. We have not reduced commercial capacity on the Blue Puttees and Highlanders during this period. In addition, the Leif Ericson has been placed into the schedule.

How will these changes impact cabin reservations?

Customers on the Gulf (Port aux Basques/North Sydney) service who receive revised schedules will see no impact to their accommodations. Unfortunately, with the switch from the Ala’suinu to another vessel we will not be able to accommodate all customers with their accommodations. Customers who do not receive equivalent accommodations on their updated itinerary will receive a full refund.

Is it possible to cancel some Port aux Basques crossings to continue the Argentia service?

Due to high traffic volumes, cancelling the Argentia crossings will enable us to transport the additional customers via the shorter Port aux Basques-North Sydney service. This would not be possible by maintaining the Argentia service.
