Commercial Driver Information
Welcome aboard. Here’s what you need to know to make your trip with Marine Atlantic safe and smooth.
- Marine Atlantic is dedicated to providing a safe and respectful environment for all. Racism, discrimination, harassment, and violence will not be tolerated—thank you for helping us ensure a positive experience for everyone.
- Lounges, washrooms, and showers are available at North Sydney and Port aux Basques terminals.
- A load manifest is required at check-in. All dangerous goods must be declared with the proper documentation.
- Please follow directions from staff. The speed limit on terminal property is 15 km/h.
- If you have questions or concerns, ask to speak to a supervisor. In an emergency onboard or in the terminal, contact any uniformed staff member immediately. You can also share your thoughts through our online feedback form — we value your input and will follow up.
- Smoking is only permitted in designated areas at terminals and on deck. It is not allowed in cabins or other non-designated areas.
Driver Accompanied Units
- Every person in your vehicle must have a ticket. Drivers must check in at Reception. No one may stay inside a vehicle during the crossing.
- Follow directions from our staff as they guide you onboard. If a direction seems unsafe, stop and speak with the employee or request a supervisor.
- Engines should not be started until instructed, or when the vehicle ahead begins moving. You will have time to build air pressure.
- All cab heaters and alternative power units must remain off while onboard.
- If your vehicle collides with another, exchange insurance details and report it to staff before leaving the vessel. If your vehicle collides with Marine Atlantic property, report it to staff before leaving the vessel.

Drop & We-load Units
- All drivers must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while visiting the Drop Trailer Yard. This includes safety footwear, hard hat, hi-visibility clothing or vest, and gloves.
- Report any damage to a unit before hooking up or leaving the terminal property to the staff member signing out the drop.
