  • Social Media Policy


    Our social media accounts are intended to encourage interaction between our stakeholders, and to support the customer experience.

    We will use our social media accounts as an alternative way to share the content that is posted on our website, blog, and in other communications. We will share news about the Corporation, travel advisories, blogs, travel tips and other information relevant to our corporation and customers.

    Our accounts are actively monitored Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Your questions, concerns or comments are welcome 24/7, we will do our best to answer those received outside normal business hours as soon as possible.

    Terms of use

    Our accounts, and the information provided, are solely for the convenience of interested users. While Marine Atlantic works to verify the accuracy of content, the Corporation shall not be responsible for any user reliance on the accuracy, completeness, efficacy, timeliness or reliability of the content.

    The user agrees to engage with Marine Atlantic’s social media accounts in such a way as to not breach the laws of jurisdiction in which the user currently resides.

    Links to other sites

    Marine Atlantic’s social media accounts may share links to websites that are not under the control of Marine Atlantic. Marine Atlantic is not responsible for the accuracy, currency or reliability of the content, nor does it endorse the sites and their content.

    Posts – questions, comments and messages

    Posts are defined as comments, replies, tweets, direct messages, private messages, as well as reviews, photos, and videos.

    Marine Atlantic cannot commit to replying to every post across our social media accounts. We will, however, attempt to engage in conversation when possible.


    Official Languages

    Marine Atlantic is committed to making all information products available in both of Canada’s official languages. Any posts that originate from Marine Atlantic will be made available in English and French.

    Subject to the official language of choice used to initiate communications with Marine Atlantic, responses will be made in either French or English. Users should be aware that some external links direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that may not offer content in both, or possibly either of Canada’s official languages.

    We welcome your comments; however, please note that your submissions are not private and are immediately available for viewing in and forms part of the public domain. By engaging with, and agreeing to become a user of Marine Atlantic’s social media accounts you acknowledge and agree that your identity, views and comments will be available to members of the public. You confirm, acknowledge and agree that becoming a user of Marine Atlantic’s social media accounts irrevocably operates as your consent pursuant to the Privacy Act R.S.C. c. P-21 to publicly disclose your personal information including, but not limited to your name, comments, views or any other information supplied/related for the purposes contemplated herein in connection with your participation of these accounts.

    To protect your own privacy and the privacy of others, please do not include phone numbers or email addresses in the body of your public posts. Information you provide will be monitored for inappropriate or unnecessary personal information or images about the submitter or a third party, and Marine Atlantic will take reasonable steps to protect your privacy and that of a third party.

    You also agree not to use this site in such a way as to offend the privacy, personal, property or other rights of any individuals or organizations.

    In the case of ongoing investigations or legal proceedings, we will not be able to comment.


    Public Comment Guidelines

    We encourage users to share thoughts and opinions on Marine Atlantic’s social media pages, and we expect that this will be done in a respectful manner.

    If a user has a compliment, complaint or a suggestion respecting Marine Atlantic’s service or a Marine Atlantic employee and would like an alternative to contacting us on social media, the user is encouraged to submit it to Marine Atlantic’s Customer Relations Department through email with customer_relations@marineatlantic.ca, or by phone 1-800-897-2797. 

    Users are advised that Marine Atlantic neither verifies nor confirms the accuracy of user comments or their compliance with the guidelines outlined here.

    Marine Atlantic does not agree with, or endorse every post made on our accounts by users. Our goal is to share ideas and information with as many people as possible and our policy is to accept the majority of posts made on our accounts.  

    All comments will be moderated and reviewed by Marine Atlantic staff. We will not tolerate comments that are offensive to an individual or an organization, rude in tone, or abusive. We also reserve the right to edit or refuse comments that meet any of the following conditions:

    A comment may be deleted if it is:

    • contrary to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or law
    • containing the full name of any current, or former Marine Atlantic employee
    • racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, or life-threatening messages
    • serious, unproven or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations
    • aggressive, coarse, violent, obscene, or pornographic comments
    • messages where the sender is not the author
    • profanity, obscenity or vulgarity
    • nudity in profile pictures
    • defamation to a person or people
    • name calling and/or personal attacks
    • comments whose main purpose are to sell a product
    • comments that infringe on copyrights
    • spam comments
    • other comments that the Marine Atlantic social teams deem inappropriate

    Posts in violation of this policy may result in Marine Atlantic deleting posts, comments, photos, or subsequently blocking users in question to prevent further posts which Marine Atlantic deems inappropriate.

    Users/Readers are advised that the views and comments expressed by Marine Atlantic are subject to change and may reflect only a summary, portion or incomplete overview of Marine Atlantic’s position on any matter.

    Because the servers of social media platforms are managed by a third party, our social media accounts are subject to downtime that may be out of our control. As such, we accept no responsibility for platforms becoming unresponsive or unavailable. 

    Following, Favouriting and subscribing

    Our decision to follow, favourite, like or subscribe to another social media account does not imply an endorsement of that account, channel, page or site, and neither does sharing (re-tweeting, reposting or linking to) content from another user.
