Properties and Observations

Series of hermetically sealed metal cells containing sodium, electrically connected and secured within a metal casing. "Cold" batteries (batteries containing elemental sodium only in the solid state) are electrically inert. Batteries are activated by heating to between 300°C and 350°C before operating to produce electricity. Activated batteries (i.e., "hot" batteries containing liquid elemental sodium) may cause fire through short-circuit of the terminals. Batteries or cells should not be offered for transport at a temperature such that liquid elemental sodium is present in the battery or cell unless approved, and under conditions of transport established by the competent authority.
